Research Project:
Treatment of Spontaneous Non-Small cell Lung Cancer in Transgenic Mice with PRIMA-1, a Novel Anti-Cancer Agent
Summary:
Dr. Duan is testing a novel anti-cancer agent targeting the tumor-suppressor p53. Using preclinical models, Dr. Duan will be testing PRIMA-1, a small molecule that can restore function to p53, alone or in combination with chemotherapy. This work will help guide future strategies targeting p53 therapeutically in the treatment of lung cancer.

Final Report
Dr. Duan is continuing studies of the anti-cancer agent PRIMA-1. After treatment is completed, Dr. Duan will continue to analyze the effects on cell proliferation and apoptosis. Dr. Duan also made significant progress in evaluating microRNA involved in PRIMA-1-induced apoptosis, identifying a key component of PRIMA-1-induced apoptosis. Studies suggest the potential feasibility of using p53 restoring activity small molecules to treat lung cancer.
Notable Accomplishments
Dr. Duan published his work on miRNA-34a in the International Journal of Cancer.
